The train journey through Sri Lanka's central highlands is consistently ranked among the most spectacular railway experiences on earth. Built by the British during the colonial era to transport tea from the plantations to Colombo's port, these narrow-gauge railways now carry passengers through some of the most breathtaking landscapes imaginable.
The most celebrated route runs from Kandy to Ella, a journey of approximately seven hours that winds through an ever-changing tapestry of emerald tea plantations, misty mountain peaks, cascading waterfalls, and charming village stations where vendors pass steaming cups of tea through open windows.
The journey begins its scenic ascent after Peradeniya Junction, climbing steadily through the Kadugannawa Pass with its dramatic gorge views. As the train rises above 1,200 metres, the landscape transforms into rolling carpets of manicured tea bushes punctuated by Tamil tea pluckers in colourful saris.
Nanu Oya station serves as the gateway to Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka's 'Little England.' This colonial hill station sits at 1,868 metres and offers a refreshingly cool climate, manicured gardens, and some of the island's finest tea estates. It's worth breaking the journey here for a night or two.
The stretch from Haputale to Ella is arguably the most dramatic, with the train threading through tunnels, crossing bridges over deep valleys, and hugging cliffside curves that offer heart-stopping views. The famous Nine Arch Bridge near Ella is an engineering marvel that has become one of Sri Lanka's most photographed landmarks.
For the best experience, travel in second or third class with open windows and doors — the unrestricted views and interaction with fellow passengers are part of the magic. First class has air conditioning and sealed windows, which ironically diminishes the experience.
Book tickets at least a few days in advance for reserved seats, especially during peak season (December to March). Alternatively, unreserved second-class tickets can be purchased on the day but may require standing during busy periods.
Sit on the right side when travelling from Kandy to Ella for the best views. Bring a light jacket as temperatures drop noticeably at higher elevations, and don't forget your camera — you'll want to capture every moment of this unforgettable journey.
